Villa N

The nature of Yakushima holds more than one kind of richness: an open, expansive breadth, and an expression that deepens in shade and humidity. This project was conceived as architecture that embraces both of these qualities at once. Set as if slipping into a gap in the dense forest, the building behaves not as a wall that shuts out the environment, but as a curtain that gently tempers its conditions. The upper floor, finished mainly in white, diffuses light so that nature is perceived as "expanse," while the ground floor deepens the shade and brings out the textures of the materials. Through the experience of moving back and forth between nature that opens out and nature that draws near, the building quietly reweaves the distance in our relationship with nature.
